Traffic light status explained:
- Green: Routine prescribing within licensed indication
- Amber 1: specialist recommendation followed by GP initiation and continuation
- Amber 2: specialist or GP initiation in line with local guideline after 1st line failure followed by GP continuation
- Amber 3: specialist initiation and stabilisation followed by GP continuation
- Amber SCG: specialist initiation and stabilisation followed by GP continuation in line with an agreed shared care guideline
- Red: Hospital or specialist prescribing only
Moisturisers should be used first line for mild cases of photodamage

Sunscreen preparations
The following sunscreens may only be can only be prescribed according to ACBS and are regarded as drugs when prescribed for skin protection against ultraviolet radiation in abnormal cutaneous photosensitivity resulting from genetic disorders or photodermatoses, including vitiligo and those resulting from radiotherapy and SLE; chronic or recurrent herpes simplex labialis.
Anything outside of this is not permissible.
For optimum photoprotection:
» Use sunscreens from spring to autumn in people with photodermatoses.
» Apply sunscreens thickly and frequently (approximately two hourly).
