1. Financial and clinical responsibility for prescribing non-formulary drugs
- The tertiary provider should prescribe and monitor any specialist treatment required by the patient if the patient remains under the care and supervision of the tertiary provider.
- If the tertiary provider provides a recommendation for treatment but will not be providing continuing care and supervision, then the treatment will be provided by the local clinician. This will be the hospital consultant who referred to the tertiary centre if the patient continues to receive care and supervision in secondary care; or the general practitioner if the tertiary centre advise this is clinically appropriate and give sufficient information and advice for the GP to agree to take prescribing responsibility.
